"I feel like I'm someone else." It's right there. Reality slaps her out of her nostalgic reverie, and we cut to her in an empty space, looking at her unadorned, middle-aged reflection with horror and bewilderment. They then relegated this major, iconic character to a throwaway side story, little more than a cameo, which was actually a rather nasty meta-commentary about the actress herself.Ĭonsider: She's shown in an office, pointlessly and endlessly arguing with an exasperated man (Lynch?) Repeated mentions of an affair with Billy (Zane?) Then everything stops so she can do the Audrey dance, looking fairly ridiculous swaying dreamily like a moony teenager while a bar full of actual young people just stare at her. Remember she was supposed to be the lead in Mulholland Drive before Lynch "went another direction"? After confirming that they still don't see eye to eye, Lynch essentially replaced her with Laura Dern. Why the change? Because Sherilyn Fenn is a pain in the ass to work with.įenn and Lynch famously never got along. In other words, the tulpa stuff, the doorbell speech, the Naido reveal, the 430 ritual - all of that was supposed to be Audrey. Further, I believe all the stuff originally intended for Audrey was given to the "new" character of Diane, who likely was not in the early drafts. There was a rumor that Audrey originally had a larger role in The Return, but that her part was cut down before shooting started for some unknown reason. Don't ask me to cite sources as there are none. Caveat - This is my pet theory based on conjecture based on (mostly) rumor.
